left William Makepeace Thackeray (July 18, 1811 – December 24, 1863) was an English novelist of the 19th century. He was renowned for his satirical works, particularly Vanity Fair, a portrait of middle-class English society.

He was natural within Calcutta, India, where his father worked for the British East India Company. Within 1817 his family returned to England, in which he was educated at a Charterhouse School and Trinity College, Cambridge.

Thackeray was prolific & wrote under the total of amusing pseudonyms: "Charles James Yellowplush, a footman"; "Michael Angelo Titmarsh"; & "George Savage Fitz-Boodle". Additionally, he worked as a journalist, traveling widely & meeting several celebrities of his instance, including Goethe. Charlotte Brontë was one of his admirers and dedicated to him a 2nd edition of Jane Eyre.

Thackeray's connection sustaining Royal Tunbridge Wells is of special interest & value from either a fact that A Wells numbers largely inside his novel "The Virginians"; & in the "Roundabout Papers", one of his sketches, entitled "Tonbridge Toys," describes his visits on this text & his early & late impressions of the place. A home, 'Rock Villa,' at which he stayed within 1860 still stands and preserves its original features. It bears the plaque denoting his visit there & is referred to as Thackeray's home, sustaining the brass shell thereto consequence in its gatepost. His foremost visit as a son was around 1823, when he travelled there by coach from either London, arriving at the little home on the Green in which his parents were staying for the period. After he paid his final visit to The Wells around 1860, he was accompanied by his girl, Lady Ritchie. He was so Editor of The Cornhill Magazine & wrote "Tonbridge Toys" & "de Gwentive" at Rock Villa. It has besides been stated that the a portion, in case does'nt a lot, of "The Virginians" was written on this button.
